Two HPD chases end with one car in bayou, another between 2 houses

Two separate police chases early Thursday ended with one car in the bayou and another flipped on its side between two houses, Houston police said.

No serious injuries were reported in either incident and six people were taken into custody.

In the first incident, Houston police tried to stop a vehicle near Live Oak and Francis in the Third Ward just after midnight Wednesday. The reason for the stop is unclear.

The driver instead led police on a chase. The driver flipped the car on Live Oak, rolling it in the front yards of two houses, eventually coming to a rest between them.

The driver and a passenger were taken into custody, with the driver expected to face a felony charge of evading police, authorities said.

In the other incident, about an hour and a half later in the East End, police were responding to a carjacking in the 100 block of Bedford when they saw the vehicle that was reported stolen. The couple whose car was taken told police the attackers were armed with a gun. It is unknown if the couple was injured.

Police tried to pull the driver over, but he led them on a chase into Mason Park, near Brays Bayou and 75th Street, authorities said. The driver tried to drive under a bridge and instead went into the water.

Two people surrendered, said HPD officer Christopher Bruce, and another two tried to swim down the bayou. They eventually surrendered.
