Texas reports first death of prisoner with COVID-19

A 72-year-old man on Tuesday became the first Texas prisoner to die with COVID-19, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Bartolo Infante, who was confined to the Telford Unit in New Boston, suffered from multiple pre-existing medical conditions and was hospitalized for viral pneumonia when he tested positive April 3, according to TDCJ. He was in medical isolation at a community hospital in Texarkana and died Tuesday.

His official cause of death is still under investigation.

The Telford Unit is one of four state prisons on a complete lockdown. Four employees there have tested positive, along with seven inmates in medical isolation.

In total, 36 TDCJ employees, staff or contractors and 28 prisoners have tested positive for COVID-19 as of Wednesday. More than 10,600 inmates have been placed in medical restriction statewide.
