Tesla’s new $1B ‘Gigafactory’ will open near Austin, with Musk calling it an ‘ecological paradise’

Tesla CEO and controversial billionaire Elon Musk announced his company has chosen southeast Travis County for its newest “Gigafactory” that promises to hire thousands of workers and generate over $1 billion in capital investment.

Musk said during a recent earnings call that the factory will be located minutes from downtown Austin and be open to the public, CNBC reported. Situated over 2,000 acres near the Colorado River, Musk said the site will be an “ecological paradise” with a boardwalk, hiking and biking trails.

Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement that the electric vehicle manufacturing plant will create at least 5,000 new jobs.

“Tesla is one of the most exciting and innovative companies in the world, and we are proud to welcome its team to the State of Texas,” Abbott said in the statement. “Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas will keep the Texas economy the strongest in the nation and will create thousands of jobs for hard-working Texans. I look forward to the tremendous benefits that Tesla’s investment will bring to Central Texas and to the entire state.”

The company’s Cybertruck, Semi, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles will be built at the site, per CNBC.

The announcement garnered lots of support online with many Texans welcoming Musk to the Lone Star State, including Republican Sen. Ted Cruz:
