Revamped Toys R Us store set to open Sunday in Houston Galleria mall

The relaunch of a beloved toy store is set to have its grand opening this Sunday in the Galleria, in perfect timing for Christmas shoppers.

The refreshed, 6,473-square-foot Houston location will be the second Toys R Us store reopened since the toy retailer’s shocking news to file for bankruptcy in September 2017. The other location opens this weekend at Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey.

Under Tru Brand Kids, the new Toys R Us stores will offer smaller and more interactive shopping experiences for customers.

The Houston Galleria location will host children’s events and activities, with unboxed toys for children to play with inside the store. Toys R Us mascot Geoffrey will make appearances at the store’s open play space.

“The new Toys R Us store will serve as a must-visit destination for kids to learn, play and fall in love with the latest and most popular toys,” the Galleria mall said in a statement last October.

The Toys R Us bankruptcy claimed 735 Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores nationally, including 18 locations in the Houston area.

Before it failed, New Jersey-based Toys R Us had annual revenue of $1.3 billion, accounting for 5 percent of the $27.3 billion U.S. toy market.
