Prisoner escapes custody at Ben Taub hospital, Houston police say

A woman arrested on a drug possession charge escaped custody Wednesday night at Ben Taub Hospital while preparing for medical tests, according to Houston police.

The woman, who has not been identified, was “rejected” at the Harris County Jail for medical issues, police said. A male officer escorted the woman to Ben Taub, where she was admitted for urine analysis, police said.

The woman was inside a bathroom when she slipped out, without being noticed by the officer standing watch, police said. The hospital was briefly locked down before police determined the woman left the building.

Police have asked the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to issue an arrest warrant for the escape and re-issue the warrant for the original drug charge. She was described as a 5-foot 5-inch woman with dirty blonde hair, weighing roughly 150 pounds. She was last seen wearing a hospital gown, police said.

Police said she does not pose a risk to the public.
