Pair survive violent crash that trapped driver in southwest Houston

A driver and passenger are lucky to be alive after a violent crash Wednesday morning in southwest Houston.

The pair were in a white pickup truck northbound on Hillcroft Avenue just past the Southwest Freeway when the driver crashed into a utility pole at an apparently high rate of speed, recoiling the truck back about 20 feet from the pole, according to the Houston Fire Department.

The force of the crash mangled the truck and trapped the driver, who was freed by rescuers with the Houston Fire Department and rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

The passenger, who witnesses say was about to be dropped off at school, was also taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition. Both are expected to be OK despite the severity of the crash, which left the truck bent out of shape and debris scattered across a shopping center parking lot.

“It’s a good day for HFD,” HFD District Chief Jason Wells said of his firefighters who pulled the victims to safety.

Houston police are investigating the crash.
