The man who shot at Houston police officers late Wednesday before triggering an hours-long standoff has been identified as 43-year-old Nathaniel Taylor.
Taylor, of Houston, was booked into Harris County Jail without bond on charges of attempted capital murder of a police officer and felon in possession of a firearm.
Court records show Taylor lived in the same area where he allegedly opened fire on two Houston police officers responding to a suspicious person call. The officers arrived in the 2200 block of Lockwood around 10:30 p.m. and spotted the man. When they got out of the squad car, Taylor immediately opened fire, police said.
The officers were not struck and returned fire, wounding Taylor in the hand, police said. Taylor ran inside a nearby home barricaded himself inside. At the time, police did not know he had been shot. SWAT officers eventually entered the home with an arrest warrant and took him into custody.
One of the officers involved had been on the job for three months, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said. The other had been on the force for a year, he said.
