Man shot to death at south Houston burger restaurant during fight with employee

A 70-year-old man was shot to death while fighting with the owner of a south Houston hamburger restaurant the night before Thanksgiving, officials said.

The two got in an argument around 8 p.m. at Gilmore Burgers in the 5000 block of Reed Road. The fight ended when the man, whom the medical examiner’s office identified as Johnnie Chatmon, was shot in the back.

Afterward, Chatmon was taken to Memorial Hermann hospital where he died, according to police.

It’s not known what led to the gunfire, but the alleged shooter was detained for questioning and a police spokesperson said the case will be referred to a grand jury for possible criminal charges.

Police did not immediately identify the suspected shooter.
