A man shot himself in an apparent attempt to take his own life Sunday morning as Harris County deputies tried telling him to drop his weapon, according to authorities.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 4000 block of Crosby Freeway around 9:30 a.m. for a welfare check. When they reached the apartment complex, the man had already fired at least one gunshot into the air, Sgt. Ben Beall said.
The deputies tried for 20 minutes to encourage the man to drop the weapon as he sat outside the building, but he then shot himself, Beall said. He was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.
Beall said the man, who lived with his elderly mother, had a history of depression and possibly post-traumatic stress syndrome.
The sheriff’s office Internal Affairs Division is also investigating the shooting because the man shot himself in the presence of a deputy.
