Human trafficking suspects sought by Houston police

The Houston Police Department is searching for eight fugitives, including three women and five men, wanted for human trafficking-related crimes, according to a recent city news release.

In honor of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, police together with Crime Stoppers of Houston on Monday announced initiatives they are conducting to combat human and sex trafficking across the greater Houston area.

“This is the month that we are using to make the public aware of what’s going on out there,” said Houston Police Assistant Chief James Jones. “I don’t believe Houston is a hub of human trafficking, but I do believe that we are on the forefront of identifying the problem.”

Houston police said they are working with multiple human trafficking awareness organizations, including Elijah Rising, the Houston 20, the Katy 20 and The Woodlands/Conroe 20.

Jones called the problem across Houston a “scourge” and said the department was working to educate the public and to re-educate its own officers to be able to identify what trafficking looks like. The department is also working with medical professionals and school districts to help identify victims of human trafficking.

“We are not just going after prostitutes now,” he said. “We realize now that they are victims. They are people that need our help. Sometimes, we have to arrest them to give them the help they need, but they are victims.”

Police originally identified nine fugitives wanted for human trafficking-related crimes but by Wednesday, one of the suspects was in police custody.

The names of the fugitives are Rahsaan Joshua Benton, Otis Calvin Berry, Willie James Brumfield, Imani Jean-Marie Cole, Mikia Collins, Kourtney Michelle Dean, Ashley Espinoza and Davian Samuel Rollins. They are accused of crimes that range from the trafficking of a child to aggravated robbery to prostitution.
