HPD: Officer shoots man in Houston’s South Park

An undercover Houston police officer on Thursday shot a man who approached an unmarked pickup truck occupied by officers conducting surveillance, police said.

The man reached inside a backpack, saying “I’ve got something for you.”

He was standing outside the pickup truck when one officer shot through the windshield, police said. The man is currently in surgery but is expected to survive.

Police said the officer believed the man was going to pull out a weapon, but no weapon was found on the scene. Police did not go into detail about the surveillance operation, but the wounded man did not appear to be a target for law enforcement.

POLICE SHOOTINGS: This is the third time this week that a Houston police officer has opened fire

The shooting happened in the 8000 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard near Bellfort Street, police said. The officer was working with the Houston Police Department’s Crime Reduction Unit at the time of the shooting, according to HPD spokesperson Jodi Silva.

The man is the third person to have been shot by a Houston police officer this week.

On Monday, an off-duty sergeant shot an armed robbery suspect who allegedly pointed a gun at the officer. That man, later identified as 30-year-old Kenneth Jefferson, was later charged with aggravated assault of a public servant.

Then, on Wednesday night an off-duty HPD officer shopping in a Walmart near Humble foiled an armed robbery by shooting a man armed with a gun who was holding up the customer service desk.

Check back for updates as they come in.
