Child thrown from car, killed in crash with 18-wheeler along Beltway 8

An unrestrained 4-year-old was thrown from a car whose driver ran a red light and collided with an 18-wheeler Thursday morning in east Harris County.

The child was pronounced dead on scene, while the toddler’s mother and sister who were also in the car were hospitalized. The mother was eastbound on the Crosby Freeway feeder road when witnesses spotted her run the red light at intersection with Beltway 8, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

At the same time, a northbound 18-wheeler hauling wood pallets had a green light and slammed into the side of the car, which ripped the car apart. The child, who did not appear to be restrained in a child seat found in the car, was thrown from the car and died on scene.

Why the driver ran the red light remains under investigation, Gonzalez said. Witnesses told investigators she appeared to be travelling the 50 mph speed limit on the roadway when the entered the intersection.
