Authorities are still searching for the driver in a hit-and-run about two weeks ago that left a 7-year-old girl severely injured in Galveston, police announced Wednesday.

On Oct. 21, the girl was playing in the 4300 block of Avenue P when the driver of an SUV struck her, police said. The driver fled the scene as bystanders tended to the girl.

She reportedly suffered multiple broken bones and bleeding in her brain. The child is currently recuperating at home, police said.

Police found the suspect’s dark red Jeep Cherokee about 15 minutes after the collision, but it was unoccupied. Investigators have developed a person of interest, but no charges are pending.
