A mother will face felony murder charges after officials said she crashed her car while driving drunk Saturday morning, killing her 3-year-old son and injuring her 8-year-old son.

She hit a median and crashed into a concrete barrier from the wrong side of the road around 5:45 a.m. on Mykawa Road, just above the Sam Houston Tollway, police said.

The woman is in critical condition at the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Sean Teare, chief of the Harris County District Attorney’s vehicular crimes division.

A preliminary analysis from the hospital indicated the woman’s blood alcohol content was “well over 3 times the limit,” Teare said.

The 3-year-old died at the hospital, and the 8-year-old had “severe injuries,” including a broken femur, officials said.

Investigators believe the woman had just picked up the boys from their father’s house and was heading back home at the time of the crash. Teare said they plan to speak with him as well.

The 3-year-old was in a car seat, but officials do not believe it was the right size or correctly fastened. The 8-year-old was wearing a seatbelt.

The preliminary investigation suggests the woman was driving between 40 and 55 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
