Suspect in triple fatal wreck remains hospitalized as more charges loom

Additional charges could be pending against a driver accused in the deaths of three people — including an infant — as he remained hospitalized after last week’s fiery wreck, according to prosecutors.

Gregory Allen Smith, 30, was absent from court Monday on three counts of intoxicated manslaughter because of injuries related to the Feb. 5 crash in northeast Harris County that killed three generations of a family.

Smith is being held without bond while receiving medical treatment for a broken leg and shoulder pain at Ben Taub Hospital, said Sean Teare, head of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division. He is slated Friday to return to court.

The driver admitted to hospital staff that he had been smoking PCP before the fatal crash, according to authorities. His whereabouts in the 24 hours leading up to the crash are also being investigated.

Teare said Smith could face additional charges. He was out on bond for a prior DWI arrest that court records show may have also involved the drug.
His passenger, who was not immediately identified, will likely not face charges in connection to last week’s crash. He was also out on bond for an unrelated arrest.

The three people killed in the crash were identified as Piedad Romero, her daughter Diana Soriano-Escobar, and Soriano-Escobar’s son, Ricardo Daniel Escobar Jr. An 11-year-old girl, Soriano-Escobar’s sister, survived.
