See which Astros players heard trash can bangs the most during 2017 sign-stealing scandal

Think what you want about the Houston Astros’ now infamous sign-stealing scandal.

The organization has a new manager, general manager and excitement moving into the 2020 season. Recuperating from the scandal as a fan can take many different forms: sadness, anger, blind devotion to the team.

On HoustonChronicle.com: How one Astros fan charted 8,274 pitches and found 1,143 preceded by banging sounds

Instead of those, one Houston fan coped by analyzing every pitch during the team’s championship season in 2017, looking for each and every trash can bang that came from behind the team’s dugout inside Minute Maid Park. Banging on a trash can was one of several ways the Astros communicated with batters at the plate for what pitch to expect.

Tony Adams, the mastermind behind signstealingscandal.com, spent the better part of 60 hours analyzing each opposing team’s pitch to determine if the players heard a trash can bang. The MLB says the Astros also used yelling, clapping and whistling to alert players, but Adams’ analysis only accounts for trash can bangs.

The ratio of bangs to pitches for Jose Altuve was the fewest of any player on the 2017 roster (about 2.8 percent), according to Adams.
