Roaches, food handler chopping spinach in alley highlight restaurant violations (Jan. 27 to Feb. 2)

Inspectors observed rodent droppings and dead roaches in the kitchen as well as live roaches scatter from a reach-in freezer at a Houston restaurant last week, according to health inspection records.

At a second Houston restaurant, inspectors observed one live adult roach, several dead roaches and a food handler chopping raw spinach outside in the back alley, the records show.

Each week, Houston health inspectors distribute violations that carry a weight between 1 and 25, increasing in severity. The term “demerit” is used by city health inspectors to describe the weighted value assigned to each violation.

The Houston Chronicle obtained the results of routine health inspections throughout the city and tallied each restaurant’s demerits for a comprehensive list of violations.
